coptotermes acinaciformis

Brief description:
This is the most destructive species in Australia and is present over the entire Australian mainland. With their large colonies and small size, they are commonly found in ‘hard to treat’ construction scenarios. They are capable of causing large amounts of damage in a short period of time, and are most commonly found near bushland. However in some circumstances they will show up in suburban areas.

Nesting Habits:
Gum Trees, dead tree stumps, inside patio voids, behind retaining wall timbers and inside large timber logs are common nest harborages for this species. With the ability to travel upto 100 metres from the nest, It is not uncommon for several houses in a street to be attacked by one colony.

Eradication:
Although chemical treatments are generally our first defence, if construction issues make the installation of a complete treatment impossible, Baiting can be a practical solution. This species is considered a single-site nester. Eradication of the colony can be achieved by intercepting the colony with monitoring stations and feeding a registered chemical bait matrix to foraging termites, designed for transferal to the nest.
