schedorhinotermes intermedius

Brief description:
Considered the most commonly encountered species throughout Brisbane’s household gardens. This species is responsible for large amounts of damage to ‘timber in service’ throughout Australian homes, particularly in South-east Queensland.

Nesting habits:
They commonly nest in dead trees stumps, native trees or underground and will travel across a property to get to another, creating some difficulty when trying to locate the source of the problem. They often will have multiple nesting sites too, and do not build mound-type nests. Leopard trees, Tibouchinas, tallow-woods and paper bark trees are favoured nesting or feeding sites.

Favourite food:
Eats softwood and hardwood timber (including framing timbers and trims) favouring weathered and moist timber. They tend to prefer the softer timbers, such as pine, however it is not uncommon to see solid hardwood turned to tissue paper.
